Since 2005, we steadily built up an in-house expertise in innovative business segments with a huge impact potential. We gained this experience from a blend of investing in own pilot ventures and market tests, as well as research and feasibility studies for third parites. The idea of both sectors is linked to the idea of landscape restoration:
- Impact Forestry: Taking a holistic appraoch which turns investments in tropical forestry into a driving force for biodiversity conservation
- Moringa & Jatropha: Unleashing the potential of under-utilized tree species that grow particularly well in semi-arid regions in the tropics or sub-tropics, to improve the livelihoods of the poor.
Having designed and set-up three social impact businesses in Sub-Saharan Africa, and having screened and analyzed countless others, we are in a position to mirror the findings of market or feasibility studies that we conduct for clients, with our own hands-on experience. Besides, we gained experience in a broad range of services, including project management, design of investment vehicles and the subsequent management of the flow of funds on behalf of the asset owners.
In 2013, we ended a major research exercise on identifying business models that contribute to biodiversity protection on behalf of the German government, and currently explore the terrain to follow-up on our key findings: We see a vast opportunity to establish the forestry sector as a new asset class within the impact investment industry, provided that forestry project developers follow a new paradigm to align purpose and profit – which is feasible with astonishingly low financial trade-offs.
